CHEScoop # 1

August 9, 2024

MELVIN'S MESSAGE:

Welcome to the first edition of the CHEScoop! My name is Joel Melvin and it is my absolute pleasure to serve as your child’s principal at Cuyahoga Heights Elementary. I come to Cuyahoga Heights from Elyria CIty Schools where I served as an assistant principal for four years and principal for two years. I am excited to partner with you in creating a exciting and supportive learning environment where every student can reach their full potential.

CHES is committed to fostering a love of learning, building strong academic foundations, and nurturing well-rounded individuals. We believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential to student success. It is never too early to begin discussing what is expected at school and what it looks like to be Caring, Honest, Engaged and Safe.

Be sure to check your email for an email from Final Forms in regard to homeroom placement for the 2024-2025 school year.

I look forward to meeting you and working together to make this an exceptional year for all. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the main office at 216-429-5880.

NEW DEAN OF STUDENTS

I am pleased to introduce myself as your new Dean of Students, K-12. After serving as an intervention specialist in our district, I’m eager to take on this new role and continue to support our school community.

As Dean of Students, I'll oversee student management and behavior across all grades alongside our Elementary Principal, Mr. Melvin, and Middle/High School Principal, Mr. DeTray. Together, we will continue to strive to create an environment where every student can thrive academically and emotionally.

My goal is to build strong relationships with students, families, and staff while being a visible, supportive presence in our schools.

With my background in special education and ongoing studies in educational leadership, I'm committed to our district’s continuous improvement and look forward to supporting students throughout their educational journey.

I'm eager to work collaboratively with our exceptional educators and staff to positively impact every student's life. Let's make this upcoming school year great as we continue to “Reach New Heights” together.

Sincerely,

Elena Scotton

Preparing For a New School Year

The start of a new school year is an exciting time filled with anticipation and preparation. Here's a checklist and tips to help you and your child get ready for a successful year:

  • Schedule Doctor's Appointments: Ensure all necessary vaccinations are up-to-date and address any lingering health concerns.

  • Practice Potty Training (if needed): If your child is still in the process, intensify training efforts to achieve independence.

  • Meal Planning: Start brainstorming healthy lunch and snack ideas.

  • Home Organization: Declutter and create designated spaces for schoolwork and supplies.

  • Review School Calendar: Mark important dates like parent-teacher conferences, holidays, and school events.

  • Shop for Supplies and Clothes: Purchase necessary school supplies, uniforms (if required), and new clothes.

  • Practice Morning Routine: Gradually adjust your child's sleep schedule and establish a consistent morning routine.

  • Create a Morning Checklist: Visual aids can help younger children stay on track.

  • Schedule Haircuts: Ensure your child looks their best for the first day of school.

  • Review School Safety Protocols: Discuss emergency procedures and contact information with your child.

Tips for a Smooth Transition Back to School:

  • Open Communication: Talk to your child about their expectations and concerns about the new school year.

  • Establish Routines: Consistent bedtimes and morning routines help children feel secure.

  • Encourage Independence: Teach your child essential self-care skills like dressing and packing their own backpack.

  • Read Together: Share age-appropriate books about starting school to prepare your child emotionally.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate small victories and milestones to build confidence.

  • Build a Support Network: Connect with other parents to exchange information and support.

Setting Academic and Personal Goals for the School Year

Setting goals is a powerful tool for both children and parents. It provides direction, motivation, and a sense of accomplishment. Here's how to work together to create meaningful goals for the upcoming school year.

Involving Your Child in Goal Setting

  • Encourage open communication: Create a comfortable space for your child to share their hopes, dreams, and challenges.

  • Listen actively: Pay attention to their interests and passions.

  • Brainstorm together: Generate ideas for both academic and personal goals.

  • Make it visual: Use charts, stickers, or drawings to represent goals.

  • Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge and reward progress toward goals.

Examples of Academic Goals

  • Improve in a specific subject: "I want to improve my math grades by one letter grade."

  • Develop study habits: "I will complete my homework every day and study for tests."

  • Increase reading comprehension: "I want to read more books and understand what I read better."

  • Master a new skill: "I want to learn how to multiply."

Examples of Personal Goals

  • Build friendships: "I want to make new friends at school."

  • Develop a new hobby: "I want to learn to play a musical instrument."

  • Increase confidence: "I want to feel more confident speaking in class."

  • Improve time management: "I want to be better at managing my time."

Arrival and Dismissal

CAR RIDERS:

  • Cars will only be permitted to drop off students if they are heading southbound on E. 71st Street. If headed north, you will have to go up to the HS or Klima to turn around.

  • Cars will NOT be permitted into the parking lot between the ES and the MS/HS during arrival. This will be used for BUSES only.

  • Cars will pull into the loop in front of the school or pull into the parking lane on the right side of the street to drop off children.

  • If a child needs assistance getting out of a car seat or seat belt, the driver or a passenger will have to assist. It is always helpful to have the child on the passenger side of the car if possible.

  • Staff members will be present to direct students to their lines/doors as they exit the cars.

  • Please pull up as far as possible in the loop or the parking lane so we can fit as many cars as possible at one time. This will help keep traffic on E. 71st Street flowing.

  • Adult supervision begins at 8:20 AM. Please do not let your students out of the car until directed to do so by an adult on duty.

  • Students will wait in line until we begin taking them inside. We will begin entering the building at 8:20 AM and the tardy bell will ring at 8:30 AM.

  • For safety purposes, parents/guardians must drop their children off curbside. Please do not get in the entrance line with your child.

WALKERS AND BUS RIDERS:

  • Students who walk to school will cross with the crossing guard (if applicable) and will go to the appropriate door/line for their grade level.

  • Buses will enter the parking lot and will go to the back of the building to unload.

  • Students will be dismissed from buses to enter the building beginning at 8:20 AM. They will go directly to their homerooms.

General Dismissal Guidelines

CAR RIDERS AND WALKERS:

  • Cars will only be permitted to pick up students if they are heading southbound on E. 71st Street. If headed north, you will have to go up to the HS or Klima to turn around.

  • Cars will NOT be permitted into the parking lot between the ES and the MS/HS during dismissal. This will be used for BUSES only. Cars will pull into the loop in front of the school or into the parking lane on the right side of the street to pick up children. Once the loop and street are full, cars should pull into the parking lane in front of the middle/high school to wait until they are directed into the loop or street.

  • Dismissal begins at 3:15 PM. Please do not arrive to wait in line before 3:10 PM as it causes traffic backups on E 71st Street. You may pull into the loop or the street. We do ask, however, that people with older students pull onto the street as much as possible to leave room for our little ones in the loop as they are walked out by staff members.

  • Please do not arrive after 3:30 PM. If you arrive later, you must walk to the side door to pick up your child.

  • If your child is a walker, the office needs to know if they are supposed to walk home alone or if they need to wait for an adult. If they are allowed to walk alone (or with their siblings), they will be dismissed between 3:15 PM and 3:20 PM. If they need to wait for an adult, you will need to come to the sidewalk closest to the building and scan the QR code to pick them up. Your child will be dismissed to you there.

  • Students will go directly to their dismissal doors and out to the loading area when called. They will not be called until a parent has scanned the QR code for car riders.

  • It is our staff members' prerogative to ask for an ID whenever they do not know the person picking up the child. Please have your ID ready if asked for it.

BUS RIDERS:

Dismissal for buses begins as soon as the first bus arrives.

  • Buses will enter the parking lot and will go to the back of the building to load.

  • Students will be called to the back lot to enter the bus under the supervision of adult monitors and bus drivers.

  • Buses arrive at the ES any time between 3:15 PM and 3:40 PM, depending upon the day.

  • A responsible person (adult or teenager) must be present and visible when elementary students are dropped off at home.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS!

Attendance

Regular attendance is crucial for a child's academic and social development. Regular school days provide consistent learning opportunities, building essential foundational skills in reading, math, and critical thinking. Strong attendance habits established early foster a love of learning and prepare students for future success. Beyond academics, school offers social interaction, developing communication and teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging. Consistent attendance reinforces responsibility and builds character, setting the stage for a positive educational journey. If you are in need of assistance or need to speak to someone about your child's attendance, please feel to contact the main office at 216-429-5880.
