Recycling Club at work!
From the Desk of Superintendent Young
Dear Families and Community Members,
The groundhog saw his shadow last week, and based on our recent ice conditions, his prediction of more winter weather ahead seems accurate. Making weather-related school closure decisions is not a perfect science. As your superintendent, I respect and support parents' rights to make safety decisions for their children during inclement weather. This home-school partnership in keeping our students safe remains paramount.
We have parent-teacher conferences this Thursday at both our middle school and high school. This provides an excellent opportunity to discuss your child's progress and set goals for the remainder of the school year.
Looking ahead, students will have an extended weekend. There will be no school on Friday due to staff professional development, and no school on Monday in observance of Presidents' Day.
As Super Bowl weekend approaches, it reminds us of the importance of teamwork and perseverance - qualities we strive to instill in our students every day. Whether you're cheering for Kansas City's potential three-peat or Philadelphia's upset bid (or like many of us, dreaming of a future Browns appearance), the spirit of competition and collaboration reflects values we encourage in our schools.
Please stay safe during these winter months, and don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Reaching New Heights Together,
Matt Young
Superintendent
P.S. Remember to check our district website and social media channels for the most up-to-date information regarding any weather-related announcements.
CHS TIP OF THE WEEK: Fostering Kindness and Respect in School
Creating a culture of kindness and respect is essential for a positive learning environment. When students feel respected and valued, they're more likely to succeed academically and socially. Here are some tips to promote kindness and respect:
Preschool-5th Grade:
Practice using kind words and manners daily
Role-play respectful responses to different situations
Create a family kindness challenge
Recognize and celebrate acts of kindness
6th-8th Grade:
Discuss digital citizenship and online respect
Encourage inclusive behavior with peers
Practice active listening skills
Develop conflict resolution strategies
9th-12th Grade:
Model respectful disagreement and debate
Engage in community service opportunities
Practice empathy and understanding
Lead by example for younger students
For All Students:
Show appreciation for others regularly
Respect different viewpoints and backgrounds
Report concerns about disrespectful behavior
Practice self-respect and set healthy boundaries
Remember, kindness and respect create a stronger community for everyone!

This is my fourth year at Cuyahoga Heights but I have taught for twelve years overall. I teach World, AP World, and AP European History as well as Law and International Current Events. I am also the Model United Nations and Mock Trial advisor. Prior to teaching, I worked as a researcher at Wikistrat Inc., a geostrategic analysis and business consultancy firm. I worked on projects that ranged from global smuggling and nuclear terrorism to wargaming simulations. I earned my B.A. in History and Classical Languages with a focus on Latin from Duquesne University. I then pursued a post-baccalaureate in High School Social Studies Education and lastly, earned my M.A. in Global Interactions, both from Cleveland State University. While at Duquesne University, I was privileged to perform and tour with the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, the longest-running multicultural song and dance company in the United States.
When I am not on campus, I enjoy going on many adventures with my wife, Hallie and daughter, Juniper (8). You can often catch us exploring the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Summit Metroparks, local museums or on the sidelines of travel soccer games.
I am thankful to work at such a special place as Cuyahoga Heights Schools. The support from your community is without comparison and your kids are incredibly affable and eager to learn!
Johnny Roy
I was born and raised in Southern California and graduated from the University of California at San Diego with a degree in Political Science in 2001. I played water polo and swam throughout HS and college. I moved to NE Ohio in 2007 after teaching for a couple years in California and I have never looked back. I have two sons, Taylor who is a freshman and Camden who is an 8th grader and they both go to Aurora Schools. Upon moving out to Ohio I taught at Solon High School in the Social Studies Department and helped coach their swim team.
I began teaching at Cuyahoga Heights in 2009 and I am thankful every day for the opportunity to work with such amazing students, parents, staff, and administration. It truly is a special place to call home. I currently teach AP Government, AP Seminar, Government and Financial Literacy and am an AP Grader reading US History exams.
I am the current boys Golf coach and an Assistant MS Boys Basketball coach. I coached the HS Boys/Girls swim team for numerous years as well. In my spare time I enjoy fishing, reading, and spending time with my sons as they engage in all of their activities. I love coming to work every day because I have the opportunity to work with some of the best students and staff that Ohio has to offer.

This is my 13th year teaching and my 3rd year at Cuyahoga Heights and I feel so fortunate to be part of an unparalleled school and community. I earned a B.A. in History and a B.S. in Education from Miami University and a Masters of Social Sciences from Ohio University. In my career, I have taught almost every social studies offering from grades 7 to 12 and currently teach American History, AP United States History, and AP Psychology.
I live in Brecksville with my husband, Doug, who is a biomechanics professor at Cleveland State. I have a 10 year old step-daughter and a 16 month old baby girl. I love to spend time with my family; we keep busy exploring museums, libraries, and playgrounds.
I’m passionate about volleyball; I coached for over a decade before my daughter, Margaret, joined our family. I am always dreaming about traveling to a new destination and I enjoy reading, doing the crossword, attending cultural festivals, grocery shopping, and cooking.

This week, our preschool students were excited to welcome the Metroparks for a special hands-on nature lesson! The children explored the world of animals by engaging all five of their senses. They felt animal pelts, learned about various creatures that call the woods their home, and had the chance to touch real turtle shells.
The highlight of the visit was meeting a live box turtle, which the students were thrilled to see up close and even pet! The Metroparks team shared fascinating facts about snapping turtles, box turtles, coyotes, and skunks, sparking curiosity and wonder in our little nature explorers. It was a fantastic day of learning and discovery.
We are pleased to share that our students recently had the opportunity to participate in an important presentation by Life Act, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Their visit provided our students with valuable information and resources regarding anxiety, depression, and emotional well-being.
During the session, Life Act educators discussed key topics, including recognizing the signs of depression, coping strategies for managing stress and anxiety, and ways to support peers who may be struggling. They also emphasized the importance of seeking help when needed and identifying trusted individuals who can provide support in a safe and understanding environment.
Our goal is to ensure that all students feel empowered to take care of their mental health and know where to turn for assistance. We encourage you to continue this important conversation at home and to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
