Reaching New Heights

April 4, 2025

From the Desk of Superintendent Young

Dear CHS Community,

Another week has flown by and we are getting closer to a much needed spring break. Our 3rd, 4th, and 8th grade students demonstrated tremendous effort this week on their English Language Arts state assessments. We continue testing next week with our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 10th grade students taking their ELA tests, while our 11th graders will tackle the SAT. We wish them all the best of luck!

This weekend, our students will bring The Wizard of Oz to life on April 4-6. The George Gross Track Invitational follows on April 8, and our third graders will take the stage on April 11 for their production of Foolish Molars. Weather permitting, several athletic events are also scheduled during the break, offering more opportunities for our students to showcase their talents.

The talent level of our students continues to amaze me. Whether they are demonstrating academic knowledge, athletic ability, or artistic expression, they consistently represent our schools with excellence. Each performance, game, and assessment is another opportunity for our community to see the results of their hard work and dedication. These students truly make our community proud.

Reaching New Heights Together,

Matt Young
Superintendent

CHS TIP OF THE WEEK:

Managing Stress During Spring Testing Season

Spring testing season can be a challenging time for students of all ages. While assessment is an important part of education, managing the associated stress is crucial for well-being and optimal performance. Here are some tips to help students navigate testing season with confidence:

Preschool-5th Grade:

  • Maintain normal routines before and during testing days

  • Emphasize effort over outcomes in your conversations

  • Ensure adequate sleep and nutritious breakfasts

  • Practice simple breathing exercises for calm focus

6th-8th Grade:

  • Break study sessions into manageable chunks with breaks

  • Teach positive self-talk to counter test anxiety

  • Balance preparation with enjoyable activities

  • Create a calming pre-test routine

9th-12th Grade:

  • Develop a strategic study plan to avoid cramming

  • Practice mindfulness techniques for stress management

  • Maintain perspective on the role of testing in education

  • Ensure physical activity remains part of daily routines

For All Students:

  • Celebrate effort and progress, not just results

  • Maintain open communication about feelings and concerns

  • Focus on one test at a time rather than the entire season

  • Remember that tests measure knowledge at one moment, not potential

Remember, a balanced approach to testing helps students perform their best while maintaining their well-being.

Behind the Curtain: The Magic Makers of The Wizard of Oz

While the audience watches Dorothy and her friends journey down the Yellow Brick Road, there’s another story unfolding—one of dedication, creativity, and countless hours of hard work. Behind the curtain, an incredible team of parents and students has been bringing the Land of Oz to life, constructing and painting the spectacular set pieces and props that transport us into this beloved classic.

From the whimsical world of the Munchkins to the grandeur of the Emerald City, our behind-the-scenes crew has truly worked their magic! This talented team has built and painted a stunning array of set pieces, including a dual-purpose bridge that transforms seamlessly between Munchkinland and Oz, a spinning house that captures Dorothy’s tornado-tossed journey, and a trap roof that doubles as the Tin Man’s cottage. Adding to the wonder, they crafted a trap door leading to a hidden basement scene and designed a memorable Scarecrow scene. To complete the world of Oz, they built facades for the Wicked Witch’s castle and Tin Man’s cottage, a Professor Marvel cart that ingeniously doubles as the hot air balloon basket, the grand Oz gate, the wizard’s chamber, and, of course, the iconic Yellow Brick Road.

But the magic doesn’t stop there! Our prop team has gone above and beyond, creating breathtaking details that elevate the performance. They crafted the Wicked Witch’s menacing hourglass, not one but two crystal balls (one for Professor Marvel and one for the Wicked Witch), and a field of poppies galore to lull our travelers into an enchanted sleep. Adding to the immersive atmosphere, they constructed paper-mâché trees that transform between a wild forest and a wicked forest, tumbleweeds, and a host of other magical elements.

In addition to the incredible set and props, a dedicated group of parents has been working tirelessly to keep our hardworking cast and crew fueled for their performances. The Music Boosters have coordinated with parent volunteers to provide tech week dinners nightly for the 64 students involved in the production. These meals have helped sustain both students and staff as they remain at school until at least 8 p.m. each night, ensuring the show is polished to perfection.

Even more parent volunteers will be lending their support by donating home-baked and store-bought goods for our bake sale, which will offer a variety of treats for spectators to purchase (by donation) before and during intermission at each performance.

Adding to the excitement, Music Boosters and Drama Club parents will also be selling Star Grams and roses (priced between $1-$5) before and during intermission at each show. These fun notes of encouragement and congratulations will be sent backstage to cast and crew members, offering them a little love and a well-deserved pick-me-up during the performances.

Every brushstroke, every nail hammered, every meal provided, and every encouraging note written is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these behind-the-scenes stars. Without them, the Land of Oz would be nothing more than an empty stage. So, as the curtains rise and the adventure begins, let’s take a moment to appreciate the magic makers who made it all possible.

Bravo to our incredible parents and students for turning imagination into reality—because there’s no place like home, and there’s no show like one built with passion and teamwork.

Please give a round of applause to:

A Gift of Music: Inspiring the Next Generation of Musicians

S-Tek Inc. Donates Guitars to Support Young Artists

"Where words fail, music speaks!"

We at S-Tek Inc. want kids to have ready access to instruments to help them discover that a desire to make a sound is the first step toward making music—and possibly even a career. If you know any professional musicians, you'll know that not only is it sometimes not an easy way to make a living, but it also requires an understanding of fundamental principles often learned in school.

We couldn't have music without arithmetic—how else would you count out a bar? Playing in 8th or 16th rhythm over a 100 BPM percussion or drum pattern connects concepts from math class directly to the guitar in your hands. The complexities of music theory and mathematical principles challenge even those proficient in advanced mathematics. In both the arts and sciences, we owe the existence of Fender guitars and amps to the science and artistry of Leo Fender (fun fact: he did not play an instrument). Artistic expression touches almost every aspect of making, producing, and releasing music to the world. I would argue that those who learn an instrument naturally improve their understanding of math and science.

An instrument unlocks a creative part of us that is difficult to put into words. We've all experienced being moved by a certain song or piece of music, but imagine the therapy that takes place for the person creating it. If it can move the listener, it can move the artist even more. Putting guitars into the hands of future artists excites me for what I’ll be listening to in the future.

Learning an instrument instills confidence—if you stick with it, that is. "Practice, practice, practice." Jimi Hendrix would often fall asleep with a guitar in his hands—I’ll admit, I’ve done it myself. Learning a chord, then two, then three, and eventually playing a full song is an amazing feeling. The confidence gained is invaluable.

Sometimes in life, all someone needs is a way to express themselves in a way that benefits both them and the world. Learning an instrument opens up new opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and expression. Just ask kids in the school band how cool it is to make music—loud and wonderful—with their peers! There’s a certain magic when multiple people create music together. It touches something so deep within me that I’ll call it my "soul."

At S-Tek Inc., we are fortunate to have the resources to contribute by donating two guitars to the elementary school and two guitars to the middle/high school. One kid, one note, and the spark of desire ignites inside them. That’s what this is about—passing on the opportunity to make the world a little better, one note and one child at a time.

Sincerely,

Fred B. Holzworth

Fastenal Presents on Career Readiness Competencies

A special thank you to Molly Phelps, Regional Recruiter, and Doug McCune, District Manager, from Fastenal for recently visiting our juniors and seniors. They delivered an insightful presentation on Career Readiness Competencies, focusing on the key skills needed for employment.

During their talk, students were encouraged to engage in open discussion, sharing their thoughts on what these competencies mean, why they are important in school, the workplace, and life, and how they can be developed further. Ms. Phelps shared real-life examples of interview situations that faltered due to a lack of adherence to these competencies, while Mr. McCune provided valuable tips on how students can improve these essential qualities.

Fastenal, a global supply chain partner and distributor of industrial and construction supplies, has local branches in Valley View and Macedonia. We're grateful for their contribution to helping our students prepare for success in their careers.
