From the Desk of Superintendent Young

Dear CHS Community,

The April showers continue, and at this rate, they may drown the May flowers. This persistent rain has made scheduling spring sports activities quite a challenge. I encourage everyone to check our website regularly for updated schedules and event information as our coaches and athletic department work to navigate these conditions.

Despite the weather, we had a productive week of state testing as students completed their English language arts assessments. Overall, student effort was outstanding, and we are proud of how seriously our students approached these important evaluations. Next week, our science students in grade 5, grade 8, and Biology will take their assessments, with math students following the week after.

This week also brought exciting recognition for our elementary school. At the Ohio Association of Administrators of State and Federal Education Programs conference, Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School was honored as one of only two distinguished schools in the state for our literacy program and effectiveness in closing achievement gaps. We are incredibly proud of our students and staff for this tremendous accomplishment.

Looking ahead, our middle school and high school Art Fest takes place next Friday in the cafeteria. If you have the opportunity, stop by to see the incredible talents of our art students on display.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our students and for being part of a community we can all be proud of.

Reaching New Heights Together,

Matt Young
Superintendent

CHS Tips of the Week:

Recognizing Different Types of Intelligence and Talent

Students possess diverse forms of intelligence and talent that extend far beyond traditional academic measures. Some excel in logical-mathematical thinking, while others shine in creative arts, athletics, interpersonal skills, or hands-on problem solving. Recognizing and celebrating these different forms of intelligence helps all students develop confidence and find their unique path to success. Here are some strategies for identifying and nurturing various talents:

Preschool-5th Grade:

  • Observe what activities naturally engage and energize your child
  • Provide opportunities to explore different areas like music, art, building, and movement
  • Celebrate strengths in areas like kindness, creativity, or physical coordination
  • Avoid comparing siblings or classmates who have different gifts

6th-8th Grade:

  • Help them identify subjects and activities where they feel most capable
  • Encourage participation in varied activities to discover hidden talents
  • Discuss how different strengths contribute to team success
  • Support developing skills in areas of natural ability and interest

9th-12th Grade:

  • Connect their unique strengths to potential career pathways
  • Encourage pursuing excellence in their areas of talent
  • Discuss how diverse abilities are valued in the workplace
  • Help them articulate their strengths for college applications and interviews

For All Students:

  • Value all forms of intelligence equally in your home
  • Provide resources and opportunities aligned with their natural interests
  • Recognize that intelligence shows itself in many different ways
  • Celebrate progress in their areas of strength, not just areas needing improvement

Remember, every student has unique gifts and talents. Our job is to help them discover and develop these strengths so they can contribute meaningfully to the world.

George Gross Invitational Record Breaking Night

This past Tuesday, our boys and girls Track and Field programs hosted the 25th Annual George Gross Invitational. This is one of our biggest early-season events, and it turned out to be a great night once the weather passed!

A big shout-out to our custodial staff for getting the facility in top-notch condition. Of course, our boosters program, led by Alice Tyna, Coach Martin, and Danni Connors, had some of the best concessions you can find at any venue.

Every varsity athlete was involved, either competing or working at the event, with several doing both! The boys and girls teams represented our community well and competed with class.

Our girls team, although small in numbers, held their own with a scrappy effort, scoring 71 points and finishing 5th overall. First-place finishers included Hannah Jasany, who won the pole vault by clearing 6’6”, and Samantha Vallee, who won the 100m hurdles with a career-best time of 16.12 seconds.

The boys team scored 143.5 points, taking home the title! First-place finishers included Maurice McClardy in the high jump, setting a new meet record by clearing 6’6”, and Aden Ewelt in the pole vault, clearing 13’0”.

The boys 4x100 relay team of Gavin Chamberlin, Kurtis VanDivner, Maurice McClardy, and Tristan West made school history by winning the event with a new school and meet record time of 43.59 seconds. Tristan West also won the 200m with a meet record time of 22.47 seconds.

The final winning event was the 4x400m relay team of Bentley Chamberlin, Gus Tartara, Jamir Whitt, and Tristan West, finishing with a time of 3:44.4.

Special thanks to Athletic Department team members Paul Gerycz and Joellen Podoll for supporting such a successful event. Lastly, a huge shout-out to our meet manager and amazing jumps coach, Mr. Doug Amari.

CHHS Musicians Tour The Windy City

Cuyahoga Heights High School Musicians kicked off their spring break with a 4-day trip to Chicago, Illinois. This long-anticipated tour was two years in the making, as our high school musicians have the opportunity to take a trip every other school year. Our students had the opportunity to tour downtown Chicago, seeing such landmarks as Millenium Park, Michigan Ave, Navy Pier, and the top of the John Hancock building, to name a few. The students experienced art and culture by seeing the Chicago Symphony, a performance of Hamilton, and touring the Art Institute of Chicago. They got to visit world-class museums, such as the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. As if that wasn't enough, our students got to have some fun at Medieval Times and on a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. Stay tuned to see where our musicians will be traveling in 2028!
