Dear CHS Community,
The CHES GALA was a tremendous success! The participation and energy throughout the evening were incredible as our community came together to celebrate games, art, literacy, and student achievement. Thank you to our staff, volunteers, students, and families for making this such a memorable event. And who knows, maybe Mr. Bertolone will come out of retirement next year to run Bingo!
As a reminder, Monday is Presidents' Day and there will be no school, giving everyone a well-deserved long weekend. Looking ahead to next week, we will host Vape Awareness presentations on Wednesday for both students and families. This is an important educational opportunity, and I encourage families to attend and engage in this critical conversation with their students.
On the horizon, our annual Music Booster talent show and fundraiser, CHS Got Talent, is approaching next weekend. This entertaining event always showcases the diverse abilities of our students and is enjoyable for the entire community. Please check the district website for all school events and activities. Encouraging Hands-On STEM Exploration |
Hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics brings abstract concepts to life and makes learning memorable and enjoyable. When students actively engage with STEM through experiments, building projects, and real-world problem-solving, they develop critical thinking skills and discover the excitement of discovery. These experiences build confidence and show students that STEM is accessible and relevant to their lives. Here are some strategies for encouraging hands-on STEM exploration:
Preschool-5th Grade: | - Conduct simple science experiments using household materials
- Build structures with blocks, LEGO, or recyclable materials
- Explore nature and collect observations about plants, animals, and weather
- Cook or bake together, discussing measurements and chemical reactions
|
-
Tackle family projects that involve problem’-solving and design
- Explore coding through free online platforms and games
- Investigate how everyday devices and appliances work
- Encourage tinkering, building, and fixing things around the house
|
-
Support independent projects that combine multiple STEM disciplines
- Explore advanced topics through online courses or tutorials
- Connect STEM learning to potential college majors or career interests
- Encourage participation in science fairs or engineering challenges
|
- Embrace trial and error as part of the learning process
- Ask "what if" questions that encourage experimentation
- Provide materials and space for creative building and exploring
- Celebrate discoveries and problem-solving efforts
|
Remember, STEM learning doesn't require expensive kits or equipment. Curiosity, creativity, and willingness to explore are the most important ingredients for hands-on discovery. |

Introducing our High School Science Department |
All it takes is a quick glance at these photos to see that this is a fun, energetic group of educators, ready to take on any challenge and make learning engaging and enjoyable every single day, and here is what they have to say about themselves.
"The best graduates at Heights are curious, hardworking, and collaborative. They strive to do their best and seek out opportunities that challenge them to grow into the best versions of themselves. A strong science class, and a strong scientific mindset, dedicate each 45-minute period to developing these qualities and skills. For that reason, I believe science is one of the best places to become a great graduate." -Miles Paterson
"We often refer to ourselves as the “Science Triangle” because the three of us lead the high school science department together. What we do best is collaborate by embracing our individual strengths and letting those guide our work with students. We make it a priority to be approachable and personable, building authentic connections in our day-to-day interactions. Our support is direct, honest, and delivered in a relaxed, easygoing way that helps students feel comfortable and confident. Behind the scenes, we work hard to ensure our classes are structured for success, both in the short term and well into the future." -Chad Robinson
“While my chemistry colleague, Mr. Robinson, explains what matter is doing, and my physics teammate, Mr. Paterson, explains why it’s moving, I, Mrs. Voytek, focus on why it matters to living things in biology. At the end of the day, we make a great trio—helping students stay curious and realize that science isn’t just a class; it’s how the world works, with just the right amount of nerdy fun.” -Becky Voytek
Together, the members of the “Science Triangle” bring energy, expertise, and a shared commitment to student growth into their classrooms each day. By combining their individual strengths and working collaboratively, they create an environment where curiosity is encouraged, challenges are embraced, and learning is both meaningful and fun. Their teamwork and passion for science help students see the bigger picture and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves.

Kindergarten students concluded a unit about kings and queens with a Royal Ball that also commemorated the 100th day of the school year on February 6. "We encouraged children and guests to dress up like kings, queens, knights, and we even had a few dragons,” said teacher Wendi Cichocki.
Students enjoyed donuts, strung necklaces made from 100 fruit loops, colored a drawing featuring the number “100”, made a crown, decorated a wand, and danced to their favorite music. “It was a great way to reward all of the students' hard work,” Cichocki concluded. |
