Dear CHS Community,
This weekend, we spring forward as Daylight Saving Time begins. Remember to adjust your clocks by an hour, and take this opportunity to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. This is also a good time for spring preparation tasks like replacing your furnace filter, tuning up your air conditioner, or servicing your lawnmower, even as we navigate those final cold days before warmer weather takes hold.
While spring does not officially arrive for two more weeks, we are already seeing signs of the changing season with longer days and occasional warmer temperatures. After a particularly challenging winter with numerous snow days and disruptions, the approaching change of season feels especially welcome. Spring represents renewal and growth, a fitting metaphor as we enter the final stretch of the school year.
Just as nature emerges from its winter dormancy, our students are entering a critical period of academic and personal growth. The third quarter is coming to a close, and the fourth quarter represents an opportunity for students to finish strong, to demonstrate what they have learned, and to reach their full potential. Whether preparing for end-of-year assessments, spring performances, or planning for next year, this is the time to focus on what we want to accomplish before the school year concludes.
I encourage our students to approach these final months with renewed energy and purpose. Let us make the most of the opportunities ahead. Reaching New Heights Together, Matt Young Superintendent |

Adjusting to Daylight Saving Time |
This Sunday morning we spring forward for Daylight Saving Time, losing an hour of sleep but gaining more evening daylight. While this shift seems small, it can disrupt sleep patterns and affect students' focus, mood, and energy levels for several days. With the change happening in just two days, taking immediate steps helps minimize its impact on learning and daily routines. Here are some strategies for adjusting to Daylight Saving Time:
Preschool-5th Grade: |
- Put children to bed 15-30 minutes earlier tonight and tomorrow night
- Maintain consistent bedtime routines to support quality sleep
- Plan for extra time Monday morning as children may be more tired
- Use the extra evening daylight starting Sunday for outdoor play to help reset internal clocks
|
-
Discuss the importance of sleep for academic performance and mood
- Encourage going to bed earlier this weekend rather than staying up late
- Limit screen time before bed to improve sleep quality
- Take advantage of longer evenings for physical activity starting this weekend
|
- Address the cumulative effects of sleep loss on performance and health
- Encourage avoiding caffeine later in the day, especially early next week
- Discuss time management to maintain adequate sleep despite busy schedules
- Use natural morning light Monday morning to help wake up more easily
|
- Adjust clocks Saturday night before bed to avoid confusion Sunday morning
- Be patient with grogginess and irritability during the first few days of the week
- Maintain consistent wake and sleep times even on weekends
- Create dark, cool, quiet sleeping environments to support quality rest
|
Remember, the time change affects everyone differently. Being understanding and making small adjustments now helps the whole family transition more smoothly on Monday morning. |

The Social Studies department strives to help students explore the current state of the world and their place in it as an American. I find that my role is to get kids ready by providing students the necessary skills to help them navigate their future courses and their life after thier time here at Cuayhoga Heights. |
|
|
The Social Studies Department works collectively to cover a wide range of topics from Government and Civic Engagement to American and World Histories, along with electives like AP Psychology, Law, AP Seminar, and International Current Events. We take pride in our efforts to encourage students to accept the personal and academic challenge in one of the six different AP classes our department offers. I work hard at supporting student needs while still holding them accountable to the high expectations of the district that helps ensure their academic and personal growth and success.

|
Our team collaborates to offer 13 high school course options, including six AP courses. Required classes such as American History, Government, and Financial Literacy help students graduate as informed, thoughtful citizens. I am especially proud of the exceptional electives we provide. Cuyahoga Heights students can explore their interests through courses like AP Psychology, AP Seminar, and Law. I particularly enjoy seeing students recognize how historical events continue to shape our world today and when they make meaningful connections between what we study in class and the world around them.
