Dear CHS Community,
Tonight is Halloween, and after seeing the creative and diverse costumes our students wore today from PreK through 12th grade, I know it will make for a great evening of trick-or-treating. I wish all our trick-or-treaters a fun and safe time.
As we move into November, this weekend also brings the end of Daylight Saving Time. Remember to set your clocks back and enjoy the extra hour of sleep. Though darkness will arrive earlier in the evening, the additional morning light will help keep our students safer during their commute to school, whether they are driving or waiting at bus stops.
Once again, Parent-Teacher Conferences take place next week, and I encourage all families to participate. Even if your student is performing well academically, these conversations provide valuable insights into your child's progress and strengthen the partnership between home and school. Your engagement demonstrates to your students the importance you place on their education.
Our first graders delivered an outstanding performance of NUTS! this past week, showcasing their talents and hard work. We look forward to our third graders taking the stage next Thursday with their performance of Foolish Molars.
Tonight, our football team takes on Smithville in the first round of the OHSAA Division VI playoffs. Best of luck to our players and coaches. If you are traveling to support the team, please drive safely.
Finally, next Tuesday is Election Day, adding to what appears to be a very busy first week of November. Thank you for your continued involvement in both our school and community.
Reaching New Heights Together,
Matt Young Superintendent

Digital Citizenship and Online Safety Basics |
|
|
As students spend more time online for learning and socializing, understanding digital citizenship and online safety becomes increasingly important. Being a good digital citizen means using technology responsibly, treating others with respect online, and protecting personal information. Teaching these skills helps students navigate the digital world safely and prepares them to be thoughtful contributors to online communities. Here are some strategies for promoting digital citizenship and online safety
Preschool-5th Grade:
|
|
|
- Teach basic internet safety rules like never sharing personal information
- Explain that online actions have real consequences
- Practice identifying trusted adults to ask when something online feels wrong
- Use age-appropriate websites and apps with parental supervision
|
|
|
- Discuss the permanence of online posts and digital footprints
- Address cyberbullying and how to respond appropriately
- Teach critical thinking about online information and sources
- Review privacy settings on apps and social media platforms
|
- Discuss how online presence can affect college and career opportunities
- Address responsible social media use and representation of self
- Teach recognition of online scams, phishing, and misinformation
- Encourage standing up against cyberbullying and supporting others
|
- Keep communication open about online experiences
- Review and update privacy settings regularly
- Teach the importance of thinking before posting or sharing
- Report concerning online behavior to trusted adults
|
Remember, digital citizenship skills are as important as any academic subject. Teaching students to be safe, responsible, and kind online prepares them for success in our connected world. |

Meet our AMP & STEM Teams! |
This week we celebrate two incredible teams that bring imagination, movement, exploration, and discovery to life at Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School — our AMP (Art, Music, and PE) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) teams!
The AMP Team ensures that creativity and activity fill our hallways every single week. Through art, music, and physical education, students learn to express themselves, move their bodies, and collaborate with one another. One of the most exciting traditions at CHES is AMP’d UP Fridays, when all grade levels gather in the gym for an hour of energy, creativity, and fun. Students might rotate through art, music, and PE stations, participate in themed all-Art or all-PE activities, or enjoy “CAMP Days,” where they choose their own adventure. However it’s structured, one thing remains the same — students always leave smiling and energized!
Meanwhile, the STEM Team sparks curiosity and innovation through hands-on experiences that help students think critically and creatively. Each week, students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade visit Library with Mrs. Meadwell, Technology with Mr. Miller, and Science with Dr. Currey. PreK students even get to join in the fun by attending Library and Technology with their 2nd or 4th grade “buddy” classes.
In Library, students are inspired to fall in love with reading and learning through read-alouds, research projects, book talks, and literacy-based STEM experiences. In Technology, students learn to navigate computers, code, and engage in STEM-building challenges — including programming VEX robots in 4th and 5th grade! During Science, students investigate questions, design experiments, collect evidence, and work together to discover answers. Cooperative learning, experimentation, and perseverance are at the heart of every activity.
Together, these two teams bring balance to the educational experience — nurturing both the creative and analytical sides of every child. Whether students are painting, coding, singing, building, or exploring, they’re learning that discovery comes in many forms — and that at CHES, learning is truly AMP’d UP and STEM-powered!
