Dear CHS Community,
The first week of fall brought much-needed rain and more seasonable weather, providing a refreshing change from the summer heat. This Tuesday, September 30, we have the privilege of hosting one of Ohio's longest-running high school invitationals - the 56th Annual George Gross Cross Country Invitational at Valley View Woods. This event honors former Cuyahoga Heights teacher and hall of fame coach George Gross. With the beautiful fall weather, this is an excellent opportunity to get outdoors and support our cross country runners.
For this event and many others throughout the season, I encourage you to continue checking our website regularly for the latest information on student activities where you can show support for our athletes and performers.
As we settle into fall, the days are growing shorter with the sun rising later each morning. Please remain alert for students riding buses and practice focused driving habits, especially given the numerous construction projects occurring in and around our district. Safety remains our top priority as students travel to and from school.
With only two weeks remaining in the first quarter, this is a crucial time for academic focus. Remember that first quarter grades affect co-curricular eligibility through the beginning of January. I encourage all students to study diligently, complete assignments on time, and reach out to teachers for help when needed.
Fall also brings wonderful opportunities to celebrate our community together. One such event is the Cuyahoga Heights Annual Corn Roast which takes place next weekend on October 4 at Bacci Park. Gatherings like this strengthen the connections between our school and our neighborhoods, creating the supportive environment that helps our students thrive. Hope to see you there.
Reaching New Heights Together,
Matt Young
Superintendent
Finding Your Child's Learning Style and Strengths
Every student has unique ways of processing information and demonstrating their knowledge. Understanding your child's individual learning style and strengths helps you provide better support at home and communicate more effectively with teachers. When students learn through methods that match their natural preferences, they often feel more confident and engaged in their education. Recognizing and celebrating these differences helps build self-awareness and academic success. Here are some strategies for identifying and supporting your child's learning style:
Preschool-5th Grade:
Observe whether your child learns better through hands-on activities, listening, or visual aids
Notice if they prefer working alone or with others during homework time
Pay attention to how they best remember information (songs, pictures, or repetition)
Experiment with different study environments to find what works best
6th-8th Grade:
Help them identify subjects where they feel most confident and successful
Try various note-taking methods like mind maps, outlines, or highlighting
Discuss how they prefer to receive instructions and feedback
Encourage them to advocate for their learning needs with teachers
9th-12th Grade:
Help them reflect on which study strategies have been most effective
Encourage them to take ownership of their learning preferences
Connect their strengths to potential career interests and college majors
Support them in communicating their needs to teachers and counselors
For All Students:
Celebrate their unique ways of thinking and problem-solving
Provide variety in learning opportunities at home
Focus on effort and growth rather than comparing to others
Work with teachers to ensure classroom strategies support their learning style
Remember, there is no "right" way to learn. Embracing your child's unique strengths and preferences helps them develop confidence and become successful, independent learners.
This week, we’re excited to feature our incredible First Grade Team! These educators bring energy, patience, and creativity into the classroom every single day, helping our youngest learners grow into confident, curious, and independent students.
From guiding students through their first chapter books to encouraging math problem-solving and celebrating every milestone, our first grade teachers create a warm, welcoming environment where children thrive. Their dedication and care make a lasting impact, and we are grateful for the joy and inspiration they bring to Cuyahoga Heights Schools.

The Cuyahoga Heights Marching Band and Red Rubies Drill Team proudly represented our district at the Lakewood Band Festival on Saturday, September 20th. This annual event brought together eight outstanding marching bands from across the region for an evening filled with music, energy, and school spirit.
Our band and drill team took the field with precision, enthusiasm, and Red Wolf pride, entertaining the crowd with a dynamic performance that showcased both musical excellence and synchronized drill routines. The festival provided our students with the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience, connect with fellow musicians and performers, and celebrate the hard work and dedication they have poured into this season.
It was a night of community, collaboration, and creativity, and we are so proud of our Marching Band and Red Rubies for representing Cuyahoga Heights with such talent and school spirit!
We’re already halfway through the first quarter, and our middle schoolers are doing amazing things! They continue to show what it means to live out our core values of being Caring, Honest, Motivated, and Successful. These students were recognized by their teachers with a special Howl Out and we are truly Poppin’ with Pride! A big thank-you to our PTO for donating popcorn so we could celebrate and recognize these students during morning announcements. Congratulations to all!
Our third graders dove into an exciting hands-on project during Module 1 of Wit & Wisdom, where reading and art came together in powerful ways! After learning how artists explore the sea, students studied The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Hokusai. Inspired by his work, they created their own unique versions of the famous wave. Using line, color, and composition, students expressed the idea that the sea can be both beautiful and dangerous. It was a wonderful way for them to show their learning while blending creativity with reading!
